Using The Polls Application

Polls allow you to interact with your users, and give you an idea about how your readers feel about a certain topic or issue. 

They can be as innocuous as ‘How many games will the Royals win this year?’ or something deeper, such as ‘How do you feel about the direction of this newspaper?’ To add a poll in Ellington, simply follow these steps:

  1. Login to the Admin.
  2. Go to the Polls application.
  3. Click the ‘Add’ link to the right of Polls.
  4. Type the Question you want to ask.
  5. Select the publish/expiration date/time.
  6. Select the site(s) you would like the poll to be displayed on.
  7. Select how many options a user can vote for (under Choice votes).
  8. Enable/disable comments on the poll.
  9. Type the options users can select from (called choices).
  10. Click Save.

Combined Polls

Combined polls allow an editor to link two polls together that may share subject matter. In the following poll, the subject is chocolate. Each poll has a unique page and slug. They may have unique choices or share them. The two polls are connected through linked text.

  • Publish Dates: Chose dates and times you wish the poll to start and close.
  • Intro text: A brief blurb describing both polls. It will appear at the top of both poll pages.
  • Sites: Select the site(s).

Question 1: Poll #1 Question.

  • Slug: Create a unique slug for poll #1.
  • Choice Votes: How many choices can a person can vote for on question 1.
  • Link Text #1: Create the text that will guide users back to this poll from the other poll.
  • Question 2: Poll #2 Questions.
  • Slug: Create a unique slug for poll #2
  • Choice Votes: How many choices can a person can vote for on question 2.
  • Link Text #2: Create the text that will guide users back to this poll from the other poll.

Combined Choices Create a unique choice for each question by checking the appropriate box, or use the choice in both polls by selecting both questions.
